Bullying at school is a serious issue that demands our attention, and it’s a problem that affects not only the students involved but also the entire school community. As part of its annual “Masa Pengenalan Lingkungan Sekolah” (MPLS) or School Environment Introduction Period, SD Islam Al-Azhar 11 Surabaya has proactively addressed the critical issue of bullying at school. The school held a special session focused on preventing bullying, delivered by the school’s Counseling teacher, Mrs. Wahyu Saptarani, S.Psi.

The session, which was a key part of the new students’ orientation, aimed to educate young learners on the importance of creating a safe and welcoming school environment. Mrs. Rani explained what bullying is, differentiating between physical and verbal forms. She used simple, relatable examples to help the children understand how certain actions or words, even if they seem minor, can be hurtful and constitute bullying.

A crucial part of the discussion was empowering students with the knowledge of what to do if they witness or experience bullying at school. Mrs. Rani emphasized that students should not remain silent. She provided clear, actionable steps, such as reporting the incident to a teacher or an adult they trust, whether it’s a parent or a school staff member. She also taught the students how to support a friend who is being bullied and the importance of standing up for what is right.

The goal of this initiative is to create a school culture where bullying is not tolerated and where every student feels safe and respected. By educating students from an early age, SD Islam Al-Azhar 11 Surabaya hopes to prevent bullying incidents, both physical and verbal, ensuring a positive and supportive learning atmosphere for all students. This proactive approach during MPLS sets a strong foundation for the entire school year, promoting kindness and empathy among the students.
